John Middelkoop was born in Los Angeles in 1956. Fasinated with television from birth, he has pursued story telling as a film maker and video artist since the late 60's. "I didn't know how to get into the film business when I graduated from high school, so I traveled around the country installing energy saving devices in bowling alleys. I took a Minolta SRT 101 with me and the rest is history. I was a professional photographer who only wanted to shoot my own projects, which I never made any money from. I didn't want to starve, so I put together a portfolio and started shooting advertising. This eventually took me back to moving images as my involvement with TV Commercials dominated my work through out the 80's and 90's."

He has studied Journalism, Cinematography, Photography, Art, English and a bit of Physics and Chemistry thrown in for good measure. "My friends think of me as technology geek, but really, I just know what I need to know to get the job done. I've always valued substance over style so I really believe that when I'm shooting it is a subconscious activity."
